What is WonderPlay?

wonderplay is a novel framework jointly developed by stanford university and the university of utah, capable of generating dynamic 3d scenes from a single image and user-defined actions. by combining physical simulation with video generation technology, it uses a physics solver to simulate rough 3d dynamics and then drives a video generator to synthesize more realistic videos, using the video to update the dynamic 3d scene, forming a closed loop of simulation and generation. wonderplay supports various physical materials (such as rigid bodies, fabrics, liquids, gases, etc.) and multiple actions (such as gravity, wind force, point force, etc.), allowing users to interact with the scene through simple operations and generate a wide variety of dynamic effects.

Technical Principles of WonderPlay

  • Hybrid Generative Simulator: Integrates a physics solver and a video generator, using the physics solver to simulate rough 3D dynamics and driving the video generator to synthesize realistic videos, which are then used to update the dynamic 3D scene, forming a closed loop of simulation and generation.
  • Spatially-Variant Dual-Modal Control: During the video generation stage, motion (flow field) and appearance (RGB) dual-modal signals are used to control the video generator, dynamically adjusting the generator's responsibilities based on the scene region to ensure the generated video is closer to the physical simulation results in terms of dynamics and appearance.
  • 3D Scene Reconstruction: Reconstructs the background and objects from the input image separately; the background is represented by a fast layered Gaussian surface (FLAGS), while the objects are constructed as "topological Gaussian surfaces" with topological connectivity, estimating the material properties of the objects to provide a foundation for subsequent simulation and generation.
